Watney's (spare me the jokes :-))
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 19:42 GMT (UK) »
I used to work in a Watney's pub (forgive me...I was desperate ;D) but now I can't find a website for Watney's. Has it gone under?

Reason I'm interested is that I'm looking through a box of slides from my mother's basement and there are some just labelled "Yorkshire". I didn't know she had ever been to Yorkshire...I was usually with her on trips to the UK...There is one pic of the "Izaak Walton" Watney's pub which I thought might provide a clue as to what town it is.

But, no luck so far............

Cheers,
China ;D

I'm no expert, but it seems Watneys became part of the Grand Metroplitan group, which merged with Guinness to form Diageo

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

There are several establishments that are/ were named after the author of the Compleat Angler - including Staffordshire and Hampshire!

1958 Watney Combe Reid merged with Mann Crossman & Pallin to form Watney Mann
1972 June 20 Allied Breweries replaced Watney Mann, which was taken over by Grand Metropolitan Hotels.
1997 December 17 Diageo and Scottish Power replaced Guinness Grand Met following the merger of the latter two companies. I hope that's clear   :)

Migoodness, Stan, is there anything you aren't an expert at? ;D

Well, by the time I was working in a Watney's pub, which was 81, they'd taken the name off their pubs. It was said you could always identify a Watney pub because it didn't say Watney :P ;D

Okay, here's the pub. Also a town (unknown), an abbey (Bolton I think) and an idyllic river scene (unknown), all in Yorkshire.

Cheers,
C
