Help/hints/advice to find John Thurston Senior please
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 17:56 GMT (UK) »
Good evening everyone,

I am currently going back to the bounds of my (limited) knowledge - i.e. before the censuses!  :'(

I have found the name of my gt gt gt grandfather, John Thurston, by buying my gt gt grandfather's birth certificate (he is also called John - John Junior if you like and was born in Linstead, on 12th Oct 1838).

Now John Senior's wife is Susan (nee Hunt) is on the 1841, and 1851 censuses in about the right places with John Junior in tow.

But, and here's my problem, I cannot find John Senior anywhere. So, at this stage, i must assume he died after John Junior was concieved, but before the 1841 census???

There is a death registered in Q3 of 1838 in Wangford, approx 11 miles from where John Junior's birthplace is registered as. But i am extremely reluctant to order this cert as i have no cooberating evidence whatsoever!

Can anyone think of a way i can go this one step back further? Or give any advice as to what I can do next? I do plan to visit Suffolk in the spring/summer so will this have to wait until then? i could ask in the Suffolk Lookup requests but i'm guessing i'd need more info??

Thanks in advance, any help will be most appreciated,

cheers,

lee

That one looks absoutely spot on! The whole family seems to have been for Linstead!

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find that?? I only use ancestry.co.uk, maybe to my detriment.  :-\

Do you happen t know if it's possible to get any further information on this John?

Thanks so much, really appreciate it.

Lee

Apologies for so many silyl questions,

Lee

Also, do people think it's safe to assume that the death registration i found, Q3 - 1838 will be the same death? I am a little unsure as to the the protocols when reistering deaths.

thanks again.

Linstead parva comes under Blything or Blyth registration district.

Wangford can also be Blything. (also Lothinghall, Mildenhall, and Newmarket)

But it looks promising.

This is the link where the registration districts can be found

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/places/regindex1-3.pdf

Regarding the death registration, it may be reasonable to suppose (although it's not certain) that his wife would have registered it.

This my be a complete red herring, but nearly all the Stanleys in my tree have the name Thurston as a middle name.
My grandfather was John Thurston Stanley.

I'm trying to find out why they all use the name Thurston as a middle name as we are still doing it but don't know why.  I've gone back as far as 1750 and the name is being used then...

Do you have any Stanley connections? :hopeful:
East London:
Happe/Hoppe (St. Georges in the East)
Stanley (middle name Thurston)
Rondeau (Spitalfields and Salford)
Jones (Bishopsgate - Thomas, Ostrich Feather Manufacturer)
Wood (London City)
McDermott (Londonderry and Stepney)
Upcraft (Bethnal Green)
Chidgey (Shoredtich)
Grim (Bethnal Green)
Row (Mast makers in Wapping)
Spurden (Stepney and Pancras)
Glibbery (Bishopsgate)
