Who wanted to know about DR Thomas Baynton???? He went to Western Australia and started a Pastoral Company in fact they had 100,000 acres near Carnarvon Western Australia  it survived for some time but of course is now Carnarvon there is a hill named Baynton Hill there its believed it is exactly where the Maitland River is ? not to sure on that though thats family hearsay. He then moved but to where not sure. There is also a Martin Baynton in NZ who is famous children's illustrator and writer, He resides in the Coromandel Peninsula area

Many thanks for this posting.

I have now established that Dr Thomas BAYNTON (junior) did in fact move to Western Australia for a couple of years in the mid-1860s. He seems to have come to Victoria as a ship's surgeon in 1841 (see: http://www.geocities.com/vic1840/41/st41.html?200913), moved to South Australia (Penola) for a few years where he married but his wife and child both died in 1863, then moved to Western Australia (he was a the surgeon for the Denison Plains Pastoral Company, Limited) and then back to Victoria before retiring to Sydney where he died in 1904.  A good deal of information is provided on the Australian Medical Pioneers Website at: http://www.medicalpioneers.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?detail=1&id=2241).

Many thanks for this very helpful posting.

Kind regards

Hi,

The name Baynton caught my attention.

In my records I have Barbara Ewart who married
1. 1880  Alexander Frater  they had 3 children and later divorced!!!
2. 1890 Dr Thomas Baynton 1 son who died young
3.  1921 Lord Headley separated 1922

Barbara Bayton was a published author and the information comes from one of her books, supported by Australian documentation.

Barbara's daughter Penelope Frater married Henry Somer Gullett they named their son Henry Baynton Somer Gullett later Sir Henry Gullett an Australian diplomat.

Reference to Barbara Bayton and the two Henry Gulletts can be found in the Australian Dictionary of Biography  http://adbonline.anu.edu.au/

regards

Robyn in Australia

Thanks Robyn

All I can add to this is that BarbaraEwart Frater was in fact now what she seemed to be. It looks as if her real name was LAWRENCE, the daughter of Irish immigrants, and that she managed to trick a lot of people about her humble origins.  She was however an astute business woman and a published author.

Kind regards
