The Aghadowey Church of Ireland records and Aghadowey Presbyterian Church Records are from Bann Valley website and full of errors.

The Aghadowey Church of Ireland records and Aghadowey Presbyterian Church Records are from Bann Valley website and full of errors.

That seems to be quite common ... there are several sites which contain genealogical information relating to Ireland which are full of errors ... people using websites need to check the details in case errors have been made. Maybe there's a place for genealogical tourism after all ... Irish archives contain a large number of documents which should be studied in person by people researching their family history as it is more than likely thatr these documents will never appear on the internet.

Just to give some examples of the mistakes I mean (website = actual record)-
St. Guaire's Parish Church, Aghadowey:
Long Cronamore Craigmore? = Long Commons Coleraine
Macimilan Hammond Delison = Maximillian Hammond Dalison
pb (publican) = Prebendary of Aghadowey [one of my favourites]
Denis Shirley = Denis Sharkey
Robert Shirley = Robert Shirkey
Mullian = Millican
l (labourer) = solicitor
Henwick = Limerick
Thomas = John K.

Those aren't necessarily mistakes. If they've been transcribed then the transcriber is correct in copying what appears in the original document. There'd probably have been
no objection to them making a note on the website relating to what they felt should
have been the correct name for a person or a place.

Christopher- I have seen the actual records- the mistakes were made by the transcriber(s). Some of the gravestone inscriptions are even worse- people dead before the year they were born, parents younger than children, whole lines missed out which completely messes up the information, etc.

Someone ought to teach those transcribers how to check their work carefully. The Bann Valley people should know better than allow inaccurate information to be posted online as the errors create problems and upset people searching for their ancestors.
