Hi Adrian

I love a mystery :D
As two of us have independently gone down the same road it does seem very likely your George is Jacob. I would be tempted to get that death certificate for Jacob keeping fingers firmly crossed that Julia is the informant!

OK Adrian - in 61 and 81 there is a Jacob Hemmens Ag Lab of right age married to an Eliza - in 61 his birthplace is Woodberrow Somerset, there is a Woodborough a stones throw from Winscombe. By 81 they are in Bradford on Avon Wilts - about 6 miles or so north of  Westbury. There is a death for an Eliza Hemmens age 46 Sep qtr 1883 in Westbury! This has got to be more than coincidence - what do you think?
Jan ;)

This may solve another riddle I've been playing with when and why did the Hemens mob migrate from Somerset.  Jacob may have been the first as I find a marriage in Bradford in 1856 [5a 193] - Eliza Strugnell.

I love a mystery too & you have both  done so well with this one - I searched every which way for George, but didn't think of the name change - a most interesting read

Trish,

It's like the flood-gates are open.  I've been staring at a wall with George Upshall Hemens' Grandfather for months and now I don't need to bother any more.  The Winscombe PRs are providing a host of information.  I'll still get a copy of the death cert for Jacob just to be sure I'm on the right track now.

Thanks again for all your help.

Adrian.

Let us know what the death certificate reveals
Jan ;)

Why he would change his name to George will probably remain a mystery (along with why my Hannah Saunders married as Mary Ann!)

You just gotta love Google!

I just found this......

Quote
Hambridge, Lilian
Full name - Lilian Rose Adelaide Hambridge (formerly Hemmens) born on 29 July 1884 to Julia and Jacob Hemmens of Bratton Road, Westbury. I understand she grew up in Weymouth and am interested to find out about her life there. I believe she lived at 'Lambourn' Glendinning Avenue, Weymouth, Dorset but this is just hearsay. Her best friend there was Emily Osmond.

here.....

http://www.credwood.freeserve.co.uk/poole/familyhistory/fhz_H.htm

This is the only reference to Lillian with Jacob, not George as father which adds a bit of weight to our theory.

I have mailed the originator to try to discover the source of this information.
Hemmens - Westbury, Wiltshire, Winscombe,Axbridge Somerset.
Smith - Bratton, Westbury,Wiltshire
Sheppard - Wiltshire.

Google is one of the best genealogy tools on the net  ;D

Sounds like the proof is increasing - I am still trying to understand why a Jacob would become a George? Was it a family name   ??? People do strange things - I am wondering as to what mystery I shall leave behind  ;D

Just received this from a new found relative...

Hi Adrian,

Thank you so much for all this information.  Very, very useful.  I can help you with Lillian’s birth certificate.  I have it. ..........

When and where born: Twenty ninth July 1884 (same month and year her parents were married!!), Bratton Road (I know the address to be Birchanger Farm), Westbury, Wiltshire.

Name: Lil(with one l)ian Rose Adelaide

Sex: Girl

Name and surname of father: Jacob Hemmens (not George)

Name and Maiden Surname of Mother: Julia Hemmens, formerly Drewett

Rank and profession of father:  Farm labourer

Signature description and residence of informant: Julia Hemmens Mother Bratton Road Westbury Wiltshire

When registered: 4th September 1884

Signature of registrar: James Case. Deputy.......

So the original place name Birchanger is confirmed, as is the question of Lilian's father.

All good stuff :-)
