Mardell/Mardle/Mardal
« on: Thursday 10 January 08 17:05 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for anyone who has a Mardell etc in their tree.

This is my father's side of the family.

Most of the family come from Welwyn Garden City, Welwyn, or Ayot St. Peter, Hertfordshire but there are a few from Bedfordshire.

I have been looking for the mother and father of William Mardell born Ayot St. Peter for many years now but without success and have no idea who his brothers and sisters are.  He married Sarah Anderson who came from Bedfordshire.  William was born around 1786 - 1791 according to all the censuses.

Kind regards
Hoppity

Hi Dagian,

Sadly I dont think this is part of my family.

On the 1841 Cenus William had an Ann Mardle who was living with him and his wife.  She was marked as head of household but it did not state whether it was his mother or not.  It also said that she didnt belong to the parish Ayot. She died before the 1851 Census so I still dont know.  If I could just find out her connection it would help to eliminate her as William's mother but I dont think that's going to happen as there are no records.  She died in 1844 in Ayot age 83.  On the death information it did say that she was the wife of John Mardell.

I have found many William and Ann's and John and Ann's around the Herts area but none of them seem to have had a William for a son around the time he was born.   All the censuses say that William was born in Ayot and there is not much difference in his ages.   He died 20.11.1861 in Ayot age 75 years.

Sarah Anderson and William Mardell married in 1807 in Ayot and had 8 children, namely, Ann, George, George (first George died), James, Sarah, Joseph, Charles and William.

Thank you so much for writing to me though.  Its nice to meet another person from the Mardell families.

Kind regards
Hoppity  :)

Hoppity,

I notice that you have DANIELS in your name interests so there may well be a connection.  In my Tree I have Phillis Daniels who married Robert Mardell in 1768 in Welwyn.

Regarding William Mardell .. I have found something that is very confusing.  I have William born 1776 who married Lydia Plaster. However I also have a William born 1788 shown to the same parents (Robert/Philis); assuming the 1st William was still alive (which he was) this William would have been 14 when he married which is very doubtful ... is it possible the Transcriber showed the wrong parents?

I have some of this info on my website. Pse contact me for Password.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Sadly Phillis Daniels is not part of my family, nor a Robert Mardell.  I have a Florence Daniels in the 1900's and the whole family of Daniels leads on from her.

It may be that the one of the William Mardell's parents have been mis-transcribed.  You could perhaps check the Bishops Transcripts to see if there is any difference compared with the Parish Records?

On the other hand he could have been a child from their nearby family, i.e. cousin, sister, etc., who they have adopted and had him christened with them as the parents?

The other thing is there could have been two couples called Robert and Phillis.  Unlikely but possible!

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
