Can anyone decipher the place names on a census image for me ?

Census of 1861 RG9 /271 168
Joseph John Bush Address 5 ????? St, age 46 Occ. Sawmaker born P?????? , Mole of Genoa

I have looked at it so many times and read it differently each time, an could never find the placename in Genoa.

Hi Fed,
looking at the page before and in the description of the district it looks as though it could be Leman Street.

As for the place of birth- seems to be very exotic! This site:
http://www.mmv.it/eng/index.html
shows that there is a Molo Vecchio quay Genoa - there's an email and it might be worth trying for some help  ;)
there are other sites too which touch on this area but you may have already seen them.

best wishes

Thanks Heywood,

I was veering towards Leman St.

Just wish I could decipher the Genoan place name. The Mole of Genoa I have found out is part of the Harbour of Genoa, mole being an old word for harbour wall.

As an aside , on one of the censuses his birthplace of "Italy, Genoa" was transcribed a "Holy, Gloucester" !!

You would wonder if his father was there with Navy or similar and then you are relying on his pronunciation of Italian together with the enumerator's interpretation/ knowledge of Italian place names. It could even be just an area/ street in the neighbourhood.

yes I saw Holy Gloucester- was hoping it was there it would be easier to find!
Have you any idea why he was born there as a British subject?

Just checked- I had thought it would be something to do with Napoleon- his being born in 1815 - British troops were there so hsif ather could have been a soldier, not necessarily a sailor.

Hi Heywood

I have only recently found Joseph.
Family tales, and the appearance of some relatives, said there was Italian lineage somewhere, and this is the closest so far. I know that Joseph was in England by 1836 as that was when he married, but so far I have been unalble to find anything else on his background before then.
His does not seem to be a very Italian name, so I am supposing that his father was not Italian, and as you say possibly a soldier/sailor.
As to the place name, if he had an italian accent , even less chance of the correct spelling.

I think I read on one of the censuses that he was a British subject. I have looked for other Bush people born Italy with no result.
If the Mole of Genoa is that specific area- the quay then you wouldn't (I wouldn't anyway  ;D)expect it to be a large area.
I agree with Prue - even looked at Pomerento.

best wishes with your research

Thanks Prue and Heywood.

I have found this interesting snippet about Genoa, at around the time of his birth
" Following the defeat of Napoleon in the spring of 1814, local elites, encouraged by the British agent Lord William Bentinck proclaimed the restoration of the old Republic, but it was decided at the Congress of Vienna that Genoa should be given to the Kingdom of Sardinia. British troops suppressed the republic in December of 1814, and it was annexed by Sardinia on January 3, 1815."
