Surrey Lookup Request Seabright Rotherhithe
« on: Friday 11 January 08 13:43 GMT (UK) »
Could I please request a lookup for the marriage of Jacob Seabright and Sophia Nettlingham in 1803 Rotherhithe, which would maybe give parents' or witnesses' names to enable me to go back further.

Many thanks - Jill

Hello Jill

Sorry, no record of an 1803 marriage between Jacob Seabright and Sophia Nettingham in either St Mary Rotherhithe or St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey.

Where did you get the date and/or place of this marriage from?  I can't see it on the IGI.  It might help if you gave us some more information about this couple.

Kind regards
Gaie

Thank you very much again for looking - I know how frantic it is when you research at Record Offices, you barely have time to breathe!

I found the marriage in Pallot's Marriage Index for England 1780-1837 in Ancestry.com. The parish was Rotherhithe so maybe it was another area in the parish, I will keep going.

Many thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Jill

I should have also said that this family lived, worked and brought up their children in Swanscombe and Jacob died in 1823. Sophia was christened there, but in the Censuses she says Gravesend. Jill

Ooh, yes, I can see it in Pallots!

I will be going back to Southwark very soon, I'll have another look.  It's bothering me because the parish records for St Mary's Rotherhithe aren't that extensive; it doesn't seem to have been a busy parish at that time, so it wasn't hard work looking through the whole year.  How strange, or is it just another sign of impending senility......?

There were a few independent type churches in Southwark at that time, but although children could be christened in them I think couples had to get married in a "proper" parish church for some reason.

Incidently, in Pallots there's also a marriage between Cathe (sic) Seabright and John Mills 1793 Southwark.  Could this be one of yours as well?

Kind regards
Gaie

Erm - if it's anything like me impending senility I'm afraid - though I think I developed that after starting family history research which drives you totally mad after a while as you probably know!!

Thank you very much for your kind offer of help again - I've suddenly thought but I'm sure you must know about it, the website Cityark has loads of original parish records online covering the Medway and Dartford area and it is where I found the Nettlinghams in Swanscombe. More senility will develop I'm afraid as there is loads of stuff to wade through.

It is: cityark.medway.gov.uk or just put in Cityark. Hope this is a help to you for your researches if you have any in that area.

Kind regards, Jill
