Has anybody tried this?
« on: Friday 11 January 08 13:59 GMT (UK) »
You probably have all tried this and it's just me that has only just discovered this ::)

Yesterday I went onto the National Archives site and put an ancestors name in the general search facility........and I actually got all sorts of results!!

Some of which are actually worth persuing.

Just a thought. If you've never tried this it's worth giving it a go.

Can't wait to go the the LMA to see what that was all about!  ;D

Oooeerr!!   :o  A possible relative was in a contretemps with the aristocracy and even drew the Royal Family into the fray.

I would like to know what that was all about  ;D

I put a relative in and it came up with an RFC medal card for WWI.
I didn't even know what he did in WWI, but the full name is correct as is the county, and it's not a common name.
Might have to spend 3.50pounds and get the card now.

Thanks for the insight.
I am researching the following families:
Hurst / Payne - Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Worcestershire
Toon(e) - Leicestershire
Batchelor / Foster - Warwickshire / Northamptonshire
Hardy - Dorset

My web site has the family tree showing.  I am researching primarily the Payne, Hurst, Foster and Batchelor lines in the Midlands.

Hi peeps, The NA should be one of our top/first places to search for our ancestors.  However, I do not think it's a very easy site to navigate but this must be due to the huge amount of information held there.

It does take some time to get your head around the search facilities and the catologues but in the end it is well worth the effort.  I asked for help and got some excellent advice ...

Tony, when you download the medal card, get some advice from the armed forces board to help decipher it.

Good luck in taming the beast ;)
