Yes, TNA will be closed for the week starting 21 Jan, re-opening 28 after major alterations to the public areas (if you thought there had already been major alterations, you ain't seen nuthin' yet! There will still be more changes to come until about May, but it should be fully operational in its new incarnation from 25 March (ie after Easter Monday). At the moment it is very much a work in progress, with reduced seating capacity for the duration, while extra desks, computers et al are being put in.

I have just tried with the same results.I thought with the national archives being in London it only had records for the south of england.I have never used the site because my ancestors are northerners.

Celia

Never mind the north of England, there are records in TNA that relate to the whole of the British Isles (yes, that includes you, Ireland), former colonies (that includes you, USA) and pretty much everywhere really. The Public Record Office (now the most visible, but not the only component of TNA) was founded to preserve records generated by central government and the English legal system. So if the governmeent instigated something on a national basis, such as the Census, there will be a national collection of records at TNA, even though they contain details at household level.

When the website has stopped behaving like a stroppy teenager, have a look at the list of Research Guides (there is a drop-down menu under 'Research...' on the red bar across the top of every page of the site) to get an idea of the range of records held there. And just for fun, put the name of any town or village in the search box to see what comes up. Enjoy.

I hope that makes sense.

They are upgrading the Server,  and the best time to do it was around December and January when people are normally busy with holidays etc.,

Thank you for putting me onto this site, am now desperately trying to find someone to equal or better the 'stabbing himself while lunatic' chap!!!  ;D

One question for those more experienced on the NA site than me. I'm looking at a probable ancestor of my partner, and it has this as the link: Bloggs, Joe (fl 1830) Engineer and Inventor. What on earth does the 'fl' mean? The guy I'm looking for was born in 1824ish.

Ta for any ideas - the faqs section can't seem to help me.
