J. Ellis WW1
« on: Friday 11 January 08 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

Can anyone help me? I am looking for  information on my Grandfather John (Jonathan) Ellis
who was in WW1.
He told my husband that he was gassed in  France and sent home for recuperation. Then was dispatched to Egypt, where he rode with the (we think) the 5th Australian division. There he was wounded and shipped home on the deck of a ship that was torpedoed and was picked up by a Japanese distoyer and returned home.

He enlisted from Crayford Kent England. But we are not sure which regiment he was in. Thankyou Carol ???

:)Hi Everyone,

Yes the Jonathan Ellis on the census is my Grandad, his parents were Walter and Amelia Ellis.

He was born in 1893 and lived in Crayford Kent. the address was 12 Dudley Cottages, Arthur Street, Crayford.

I would like to know of his WW1 record, as we do not know anything about it. He had 7 sons, but never talked to them about his war experiences. The 7 sons are now all dead, so there is no one to ask.  So if anyone can tell where to look I would be very grateful.

Cheers Kuri.

Hi Carol !

There are a few "ifs" but assuming his name is Jonathan Ellis the good news is there are Medal Index Cards for only 4

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02jg/

I can discount 4319 Pte Ellis for you as he was pensioned, and his DofB is incorrect.

For the others, none appear on the database "Soldiers who Died in the Great War", however you would need to check www.cwgc.org to eliminate them their and then perhaps contact both the Leicestershire and Warwickshire Regiments to track their movements during the war.

Also it's very possible that his records are at The National Archives, however you would have to search yourself or send a researcher......

Hope this helps !

Wendi  :)

Hi Wendi
Thankyou for your help. As I am not sure which name my Grandfather enlisted
under, it is hard to find him. His name could be Jonathan, Johnathan or John.
He enlisted from Kent. I do that much!! As there or so many on the Ancestry website without DOB or addresses it is hard to say which could be him.
Cheers
Kuri. :D

if he enlisted as jonathan, there are only 4 medal cards (i've pmd you)
but if it was John, you will have to go through over 550  ???

Yes I do realize that, and as some of the J. Ellis's have no date of birth it is like looking for needle in a haystack. I don't think I will ever find him. But thank you for the info. Cheers Kuri. :'(
