WW1 death
« on: Saturday 12 January 08 15:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm not sure where this should go, so I hope this is OK here.

I wondered if anyone knew where to get a death certificate for someone who died abroad during WW1.

ONS were not very helpful when I asked them, they just referred me back to their 'Frequently asked questions' and it wasn't one of them.

I have the details of where the soldier concerned is buried - which is in France.

Thanks for looking.

Harpist.

The death certificate will be in the WW1 War Deaths (separate registers for Officers and Other Ranks - in death as in life)

These are online at Findmypast, but if you don't have a subscription or free access to this site, let me have the name and I'll look for you. HOWEVER, the results are not usually very informative, and there is more infromation on the CWGC site, which costs nothing.

This is assuming he was English - if he was Scots or Irish the notification should have gone to the RG of the relevant country instead of England and Wales.

Hi Mean-Genie,

thanks for your reply and offer - I'd like to take you up on that please.
The soldier's name is THOMAS WILLIAM EMERSON and he died 14/09/1915.He is buried in France and I have all those details. What I need to know is where I can purchase a copy of the death certificate. I am currently awaiting a copy of his marriage cert, but it's the death cert I am particularly keen to obtain.

Thank you again,
Harpist.

This subject has been covered at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,271988.0.html
They are available through the ONS just like any other certificates. However, usually the Cause of Death is just Killed or Missing in action and the place of death is France; Belgium etc.

There is no Thomas or Thomas W Emerson in the indexes for 1915, but there are two Thomas W Emersons in 1918:

L/Cpl 12751    Leic   1918    X47 303

Pte 241774    SR    1918     X10 397

Sorry!
