TROTTER in or near SEAGOE
« on: Saturday 12 January 08 18:52 GMT (UK) »
Looking for BDM information for JOHN TROTTER b. abt. 1789 in or near SEAGOE, Co. Armagh.

Married MARGARET JOYCE (b. 1795) in SEAGOE

Children of JOHN & MARGARET TROTTER:

CHRISTOPHER TROTTER (b. abt. 1818)
HANNAH MARIA TROTTER (b. abt. 1815)

John Trotter was listed as a Methodist in Canada.

Left to immigrate to U.S.A 1820

If John Trotter kept to typical Irish naming patterns (1st. son named after Father's Father & 3rd. son after Father...then John Trotter's father may be David Trotter and his Grandfather may be Christopher Trotter.

Any help in look-ups for John, Margaret & their two children would be greatfully appreciated!!!

Hello Balagirl,

I think it may take some time to track down your Trotters as there were two types of Methodist. There was the Wesleyan Methodist Connexion (now a formal church) and the Primitive Wesleyan Methodists.

"Church Records" on the 'From Ireland' © website of Dr. Jane Lyons of Dublin explains the situation ... www.from-ireland.net/gene/churchrecrds.htm#methodist1

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
