okay are these all the children of William Linklater and Margaret Brown...if they are it seems like the middle names give clues to previous generations ... hopefully  ::)

WILLIAM BROWN LINKLATER   29 OCT 1826 Sandwick, Orkney

ROBINA HOURSTON LINKLATER    16 JAN 1831 Stromness, Orkney

ANN WATT LINKLATER     16 AUG 1823 Sandwick, Orkney

Parents NATHAN CANTLEY &  MARGARET MOAR

Gadget will know more...but I think the mothers maiden name  is given as middle name to the child on occasions in Scotland?  This is a good bet that his mother is Grissel Smith, or is it his grandmother, late... losing the plot already   :-\

Marriage:  25 DEC 1856   Walls And Flotta, Orkney, Scotland

mother's name or some other ancestor's name is often used - I've got surnames from both sides in my lines  ::)

Also Margaret could be More/Moar or Muir (and other variations). Muir was fairly common in Orkney at one time.

That's where I got the tenuous link to William of HBC

"William Linklater
Census: - Occupation HBC (Hudsons bay Company)
Sasines give tenancy of a farm called Garth and later, various other buildings in Stromness.
Sasines give Wife as Margrat Broun"
Scan at 300 plus for restores please. Scan at larger dpi for small photos. Don't forget to crop the scanner bed out! (Them's the white bits)
Please feel free to alter any work by me for the benefit of the Poster.

Linklater - Middlesbrough/Orkney/Shetland
Cantley - Longhope/Hoy
