Not necessarily, George  ;)

Scottish naming conventions -

1st son - after father's father
2nd son - after mother's father
3rd son after father

1st daughter  - after mother's mother
2nd daughter - after father's mother
3rd daughter - after mother

Then it goes with father's siblings and mother's siblings in the same pattern, etc. BUT it wasn't always used  ::)

Hi George

i have been searcing the NA for you .... There are a few mariner records for Linklater peeps ,,, but I have no clue if they are from Scotland ...I was wondering if the men of this family were all Navy guys ....?

i found these...not sure if they are your relations ...thought I would post, just in case .... ;D

Online Document ADM 188/576
Name Linklater John Baikie , F8269 of Kirkwall, Orkney Isles
Date: 1886.

Online Document ADM 188/1058
Name Linklater Percy George , M20105 of Kirkwall, Scotland
Date: 1892.

arrghhh ...clicked wrong button .... NA has dissappeared ... saw a James Linklater ..naval record  from 1818 -? looked just like Nathaniel"s ADM doc ...will try to find it again..

Quite correct Gadget  :)

You want to see the William's, Nathaniel's, and variations thereof down over towards today.  ::)

Some of the younger generations have called sons 'Nathan' because they think it's 'new'  ;D ;D

Hi Deb,

Only later generations 1914 onwards in the armed services.

WB should have a merchant ticket through service before the qualifying bit was introduced. He ended his career as Master Mariner

His sons -

William Nathaniel - Engineer
Nathaniel George should have a seamans ticket. (Ends as First Officer
James may have but was a 'Marine Engineer'
Robert - disappears into thin air after 1871 census

Baikies are tied in somewhere as are Heddles, Hourstons. Velzians .......

I'd guess you must have seen this; is it possible Robina had a middle name she is using?

If these two families of Chalmers are related, have they exchanged their female servants between the two households at some point, and got the names confused on the Census? I know it's a long shot...

Gadget

PS - it's £10 to buy and though you're one of my pals, I think that's a bit much for me but we could work out a system  :-\

Gadget - you're a genius.

I have the certificate this day.

"October 23rd 1826 was born William Brown Linklater to Wm. Linklater & Margaret Brown of Hoy and Baptized the 2 (???????) by the reverand Charles Clouston"

Brilliant, Thank You.
