14 Portland Place North Leith

Hi - my gr-grandparents were married at 14 Portland Place North Leith, February 19th, 1862.  The street still exists but I cannot find that specific address.

The closest entry that I can find back near that date searching by address is the 1881 census which lists it as an uninhabited Druggist Shop.

Can anyone help with what was located at this address in the 1861 census or in early 1862?

According to Ancestry.co.uk there were a number of households at 14 Portland Place, Leith (North Leith registration district). The implication is that it was probably a tenement building with a numbrer of flats.

It may have been re-numbered or re-built, hence it appearing to be a shop in 1881.

If you do a Google search for "14 Portland Place" Leith you will find a hot food takeaway premises available to rent.

It could have been a shop on the ground floor and several flats above it. My G. Grandparents lived above a pub, in Edinburgh, at that time. (A handy arrangement)

Most marriages in Scotland in the 19th century took place in private houses - either in the home of the parents of the bride or groom, that of a friend or at the manse (where the marriage would take place in the minister's drawing room).  14 Portland Place was not the address of any of the local ministers so I assume that the marriage took place in the home of friends or family.  This fits in with the census entries and also those in the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories both of which sugggest that this address was residential accomodation,

I used to live in Portland Street, and can confirm the houses are tenements, just across the road from the old port of Leith, there used to be big whiskey bonds, ship builders etc there but now there is luxury flats shops and a cinema complex!
by the way Portland Street was previously known as Albany Street if that is any help.
