Being a bit cheeky can i jump on this thread and ask if there is any further information on this couple that got married there too.

30 Apr 1826  William Mains = Ann Charlton

Thank you
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi another cheeky jump-in  :)

Hi David
Can I ask about your William Mains please?
I have a William Mains marrying Isabella Newton in 1829, All Saints Newcastle on Tyne.
I believe he was born c1807 Ryton, Durham, parents John Mains and Ann Forster (IGI), and according to various census was a blacksmith

Hi Janis,

Thank you for that link i will give it a try.

Hi Sylvia

My William Mains was born in the early 1790's in Northumberland. Maybe Hexham, maybe Stamfordham - i am still trying to confirm that. He was a coalminer. I am sure i have the correct marriage for him to Ann Charlton as i have the birth certificates for two of their children which confirms the Charlton connection. Ann dies in 1842 and William in 1857. There may be a connection between my William Mains and yours eg cousins or something similar as Ryton his close to the areas my William turns up in but at the moment i can not not prove it either way. hope that helps.

Marriage Witnesses.

I liked Janis's term " Frequent Flyers" to refer to the folk who frequently stood in as witnesses. Much better than my own term of " Serial Wits".

Been able to write was not a requirement to standing as a witness... many just made their "mark" of "X".

But we cannot think of a parish/parish church of just been staffed by a vicar and with or without a curate, to do religious services.

Parishes on top of the religious requirements, were also admin centres (before local authorities were created), to handle many aspects of local life...
e.g. the parish rate, security, support of the poor, maintenance of highways, a representative on the board of the Workhouse Union ("Union" of Parishes ! ), later on,  a rep on the committee that were responsible for civil cemeteries ( although civil cemeteries were civil... the task of running them was given to groups Church of England parishes.

So each parish might have a staff of officials to look after all this admin...some paid, some volunteers.. and also help out at weddings.....enough already.

(The above is a crude summary that does not do justice to the sophistication and complexities of the typical  English Parish)
