1841 Census Fife - Moneypenny
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for the address for David Moneypenny b approx 1771 who is recorded in the 1841 Scotland Census for Fife aged 70. There is only one other Moneypenny at the address, Maria aged 55 so I am intruiged as to why all the others have different surnames. Maybe it's a workhouse or hospital?

The others are:
Elspeth Davidson     45
Rose Kelman            15
Mary Lamont            15
Isabella Ronsick       35
Cathrine Smith         35
John Smith               45
Maria Smith                1
Anthony Taylor        15
Archibald Zod          55

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi

These are the occupations (where shown) for the individuals listed.  The address is just shown as Pitmilly.  I would hazard a guess at a rectory/church house

Archibald Zod - Minister
David Moneypenny - Ind (Independant means)
Maria Moneypenny - nothing shown
All others are shown as FS or MS - male/female servant

Just a bit more background.  From the Wills & Testaments section of SP:

Monypenny   David   10/03/1851   Esquire of Pitmilly, one of the Senators of College of Justice       Cupar Sheriff Court   SC20/50/22

A whopping 73 pages - not bad value for £5!

Type in Monypenny of Pitmilly on Google- you come up with a lot of hits.  You're probably aware of this:

http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/PSAS_2002/pdf/vol_056/56_072_110.pdf

The above document (a 4.9Kb download), is called the The Monypenny Breviary

From another site:

http://www.silverwhistle.co.uk/tour/Fife.html

PITMILLY HOUSE, on the road to Kingsbarns, burned down in the late 1960s. By then it was a hotel, but it was previously the residence of the Monypenny familly, which produced another notable military figure in the 18C: Colonel Alexander Monypenny of Pitmilly (1726-1801),who had served as ADC to Gen. Lord Howe (George Augustus - the cutest of the Howes) in the Seven Years' War in the Colonies. He was related to some of our other friends - a cousin of Gen. Alexander Leslie (whose mother was a Monypenny). His father was also a cousin of Sir William Erskine's father. Small world, 18C Fife!

I could get carried away so will stop,.  Good luck  I hope you are related to the above - even if not, the Breviary will make interesting reading for anyone with an interest in history.

Gosh!  I only looked away for an hour and now I have four replies!  Thank you all for your efforts!

Hi Piglet   I have seen the first document but not the second so thanks for that.  The very first people to use the name Moneypenny from 1180's (various spellings!) lived in Pitmilly and were the Lairds there for many years.

I am a Moneypenny myself and I'm putting a website together of all the Moneypennys I've recorded over the years.  I don't know yet if David is in my line.  :( Hopefully I will eventually find the missing 200 years in my own tree from the 1600's to the 1800's but they are in Ireland and that's another story!

Hello Carole! So they lived with a Minister and plenty of servants?  It does sound like a Minister's house.  I'm intruiged by Archibald Zod - I think I'll Google him and see what I come up with!

Hi Monica! Thanks for looking that up for me.  I hope you didn't have to wade through the whole 73 pages!  Sounds like a bargain buy though!

So many thanks everyone for your help.[/u] I'm off to serch for Archibald Zod now - wasn't he character in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy....?  ::)

Hi

Archibald may not have been Zod - it could be a mistranscription of his real surname.  Unfortunately, Ancestry only has the index to the Scottish censuses - not access to the actual images so I can't check the surname

A quick question - was Archibald Zod shown as the head of the house?

If the Monypennys were monied - and the census was in the 'big house' Zod may have been a visitor or even 'their' minister.  Does he appear in later census records?

Good night.  Regards,   Steve  :O)

Hi

The index just shows him as Minister - not as head.  It does not show David as Head either so difficult to know who owned the house
