Nixey Lovell and Rachel Smith mid-19th century - East Anglia?
« on: Thursday 17 January 08 13:02 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any references to a Nixey (Nixie/Nixy) Lovell with a wife named Rachel (born Smith). Rachel was baptised 1811 in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

According to oral history, they had at least two children - Nixey and Dora (possibly Midora) - and eventually ended up in Wigan, Lancashire. No sign yet found of a Rachel with a Nixey in any census.

Any sightings gratefully received.

Sharon, I know this is an old post but maybe this helps.

The Nixey Lovell that was in the 1900 Chicago census was actually named Nathan. My Boswell and Lovell family were camped with them.

There was an article in the September 23rd 1900 Chicago Tribune titled Chicago Gypsy Camps. In the article it mentions Nixey in the West Camp:

"The best known camps in the city is on the West Forty-seventh street and Western Avenue. For a long time it was home to the Stankovitch party, but they have now abandoned it and only real gypsies are now there. These are Mrs. Seed a fortune teller, her brother, Nathan Lovell and dozen descendents and other relatives of Mrs. Seed. Nathan Lovell under the name “Professor Nixey” is well known as a boxing master, having come to this country in the 80s as a trainer to Jem Mace. Though his home is in New York he was born in a tent and is know spending the summer in the tented camp on the West Side. "

My GG Grandfather Sampson Boswell also was baptised in Lowestoft, Suffolk 1822. Father Thomas mother Temperance Lovell. Perhaps there is some connection.

Hi KRMMT

What a brilliant find! Really appreciate you passing this on.

Jem Mace and his entourage were closely associated with my Smiths (Jem's nephew Pooley having married Deliah Smith). Perhaps this Lovell migration to the US explains why I can't find Nixey and Rachel in the UK.

Many thanks.

Best wishes

My grt grt grandfather was Samson Boss he had Oliver, Delilah, Moellus, & Phoebe with Susie Gray. His last wife was Susannah (may have went by Janie Rowells) and they had a daughter Rebecca who married Charles Boswell and they camped in Chicago around the same time period you're speaking of. My grandmother was Nellie Boswell and was married 3 times, To a Haight, a Walter Cook (my grandfather who died before I was born, I've never even seen a photo of him) and a Murphy. I am looking for information on my grt grandfather Charles Boswell (Maybe Wainwright) who had a sister named Elizabeth who was suppose to have a casino of some sorts. Or any information on any of them. Any Info would be greatly appreciated especially photos. Thanks! I believe Charles was from the lovell family.

Many thanks, Tiggi.

I've just had a bit of a break-through in identifying 'my' Nixey using family trees on Ancestry and am now in touch with one of the descendants of Nixey and Rachel via their daughter Madonna.

I appreciate all the help given on this quest here - thanks, everyone.

Hi Sharon,

Have you found the parents of Nixey and Rachel?

Is Nixey the son of William and Fiance bap. 30 May 1813 Preston-On-The-Weald Moors, Shropshire.

And could this be Fiance in the 1841 Staffordshire Census?
France Lovette 45 abt 1796 Umbrella Maker
William Lovette 6 abt 1835 Staffordshire
Jemima Lovette 10 abt 1831 Staffordshire

Best regards,
Roger
