Ideas about my next move??

The certificate came today for Thomas Henry Baldwin, (see first post) and he is the son of William Baldwin and Emma Buxton born 9 December 1857 in Bethnal Green which fits with all census returns.  Unlike the baptism record though his father's occupation is Carman/Journeyman not Baker!!

The vicar must have been hard of hearing!

So if we add this to the list we get:

1851 census - Gilder
1852 marriage - Carver and Gilder
1857 birth cert of son Thomas Henry - Carman Journeyman
1860 birth cert of son Alfred - Carman - that's odd!
1861 census - Gilder
1871 census - Gilder
1874 birth cert of daughter Florence - Gilder
1881 census - Gilder Carver
1891 death cert - Journeyman Gilder - arr that may explain Carman above
1894 marriage cert of daughter Florence - Gilder (deceased)
1903 death cert of Emma wife  - Carver and Gilder Journeyman

So did William senior have a short period as a Carman - it doesn't feel right somehow!

Do you think Carver could have been misheard by the Registrar and he put down the more common occupation of Carman?

I've been thinking that, Barbara 

A carman is totally different from carving or gilding. Could he have had two jobs

Hmm  although it does appear on 3 different documents.

I need to go and do some reading on gilders and if there is any connection with carvers.  Oh for more free time 

I'm going to find some marriage certs for Thomas and Alfred and see if William (jnr) turns up as a witness to connect him with the family. 

The only thing connecting him at the moment is the 1861 census and his marriage certificate which has William Henry Baldwin as his father. 

I'm going to put up a piece of that marriage certificate but I can't decided between carpenter and compositor as occupation and neither are that close to gilder, carman etc.

Certainly the change in occupations is worrying

Carving and Gilding are fine together - Carman is definitely odd.  

I need to think some more!

May I just add a scenario for your consideration.....

the carvers and gilders had need of carmen to move their work from factory to customer and back.

Since they wouldn't want just any carter doing this job, William might have been their designated delivery man and a carver at the same time.

That would make sense!

He definitely is the same person as I now have birth certificates for 4 of his children showing either Carman or Gilder and I know it is the same one because mother is always Emma Baldwin formerly Buxton.
