Agnus Darling and Robert Forsyth
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 18:11 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered that my gggg Grandfather Robert Forsyth (1801 Durham- possibly Chester le Street but not entirely sure) probably married Agnus Darling (1803 Lumsdon Berwickshire). They were married some time before 1832 (the first child I know is theirs).
Does anyone have any information on marriages to double check this? Or on Agnus' birth?
Thanks
Claire

Hi Claire

I don't see a marriage and nothing for Agnes/nus around Lamsden (which should be in the parish of Eccles).

The only baptism showing in Berwickshire is for an Agnes Darling, 8th January 1799, Edrom. Parents James Darling and Jean Black.

Have you asked on the Northumberland and Durham Boards?

Bearing in mind their ages in 1832 - is it possible that Agnus (or both) were married before...and were widowed?  If you have birth certs. showing her maiden name...perhaps she had another name in between??

Have you found them on the 1841 census? There is a Robert Forsyth in Durham, about the right age, but married to a Hannah. Could be a second wife (but we'd need to know the names of any children you know about). Also, do you have any idea of the job Robert did - this one's a coal miner.

I would look for possible death certificates for the couple - if you can find one, it would tell you whether the spouse was still alive, and may have a child as the informant. Death certs also give (often accurate, but certainly approximate) ages.

Good luck
Lesley

Claire~

Could you give us details of the first known child's birth circa 1832, please? It might help any searches that we can do for you.

I've led you down a garden path..... sorry.....
My GGGG Grandfather is actually Alexander Forsyth who married Agnus - obviously having a moment! In 1841 they were in Little Lumley, Durham with their children Henry ( Sep Oct Dec 1832), William (1834) and Alexander (27 Jul 1839). They also had Alexander's mother Mary (abt 1771) living with them. Alexander is an ag lab at this point. I don't have any info for 1851.
