POLAND: How would I find?
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 21:39 GMT (UK) »
I have got a family from Poland in my tree. How would I find out when they emmigrated from Poland to Sheffield Yorkshire. I would imagine they came over for the mining etc in or around the 1920's. Thanks. Lynette

Hi

One possibility is this website - the index is free but it then becomes a paysite if you want to view the record

Hi Lynette,

first place to look is the National Archives at Kew
You could get lucky and find he applied for naturalisation
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

then look on the Immigrants Resources board : Sharing useful links in Central
Europe

and try doing an alphabetic sort of the immigrants board for other polish searches; you might find some tips there

Good luck,

Hi Lynette,

is it today's Poland.

The question  might seem a little funny, but of course the borders changed during the wars!!

Which town/village is mentioned?

Viv
Gywnedd/Caernarvonshire: Roberts, Evans;
Glamorganshire: Griffiths, Thomas;
Middlesex: Sibley, Barnett;
Beds: Sibley
Kent: Jury, Hunt;
Yorkshire/Middlesbrough: Wright, Sullivan;
Irleand/Cork: Donovan, Sullivan;
Northern Ireland (Monaghan): Keefe;

A good point Viv.

Parts of Poland were under russian or german (prussian) rule for different periods.  Especially South Poland, which under the name Silesia (Schlesien) was under russian, german or austrian rule, depending on the time period.

Many of the places had a polish and a german name, so if you can tell us anything at all, it would all help.

Another trail:  could they have been jewish ??  that would give us a lot of other possibilities to search.

How about posting the names and as much detail as you know  :)

Bob
