Many church records from early 1800s no longer exist. For any hope of looking for church records you would need to know the religion and where the family lived- townland or at least parish not just Derry (if in the city of Derry a street name would probably be very helpful).

Hi Chrissey, Could this be your James and family on the 1861 census?  Bearing in mind this is from Ancestry, a look at the original from S.P. could verify or not , ages, and places of birth.

James Laferty
Age: 53

 Greenock West
 Renfrewshire
No 8 Sir M Street  (probably Sir Michael St)

Hugh Laferty 17 (son)
James Laferty 53
Willm Marsh 8  (grandson)

If that census record is correct it looks like James Laferty was born in Co. Antrim not Co. Londonderry. Unfortunately civil registreation of births only began in 1864 so you need to check church records when you know religion and are sure of where the family lived as I mentioned earlier.

I forgot to mention, that this census says Hugh was born Greenock.

Looking on the '71 I can't see any appropriate entries for this family in Greenock, OR for Alexander who registered his fathers death.

There does appear to be some illegible entries in Greenock.

There is a possible entry for Alexander in the 1881 though.

If you have any more info Chrissey, or can let us know what line you are following it could help us to perhaps discard certain families.

P.S. Hugh looks to be with his grandparents in Ayrshire in '51..... Doesn't look like your line, though with remarriages etc.. you never know.

Will have to rush.. work calls.

Sorry Chrissey, something not quite right here.  There is no maiden surname listed for James' mother on the 1862  death cert. Only Deborah Lafferty.

His wife is named as Ann Hill, and his son Alexander registered the death, but no mention of the name Williamson.
