Union Buildings, Kendal
« on: Monday 21 January 08 20:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
My 2X Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Thompson's marriage certificate from 1870 shows her address as 'Union Buildings, Kendal'. It sounds as though it may have been a workhouse. Any info would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
David.

Hi,

I don't know if it's the right one but there was a "Union Workhouse", at the bottom of Windermere Road, in Kendal. Union Street also runs off Windermere Road. The workhouse became the Windermere Road Institution and subsequently, the Kendal Green Hospital. All gone now - it is all housing.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply. It sounds about right. She was living on Union Street in 1861 with her 81 year old grandfather, a local preacher, and her widowed mother. When her grandfather died, they probably lost their means of support.
Thanks again for your help.

David.
