Samuel FIRMIGER
« Reply #9 on: Monday 17 January 05 03:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi Adrian,

I'll keep looking, but check out this site for mention of Samuel FIRMIGER, labourer, as a juror over several years. Port Nicholson is the old name for Wellington settlement. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/JusticePage.htm

The same host website has the FIRMIGER/FERMINGER family mentioned in the Burial Registers of St Pauls Church (Later Old St Pauls - see below) Wellington at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/StPaulsD-F.htm
Fermiger Elizabeth Emily Butler 16 months 1st Sept 1864
Fermiger Sarah 37 20th March 1843
Ferminger Samuel 70 28th March 1864

Ditto for a Wellington Street and Trade Directory 1864 reference to a 'FURMENGER S' living at Woolcombe Street:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/Alm1864TeAro.htm
Check out the other years listed, as he might appear there too. I can't see a Dr BUTLER, though. I live in Wellington, by the way, and Woolcombe Street no longer exists, but it will have been re-named.

Email Old St Pauls Church at: oldstpauls[at]historic.org.nz
to see if they have any other details of the burial of Samuel and others.

Cheers, Tor

The second problems is who the hell was William Butler, I have no idea where he came from other than he was most probably a Doctor, as he is recorded in the 1843 Burgess Roll as M.D.

Hi Adrian

The following link is on Cora Nun's website, It is entitled "Was you Ancestor a Doctor?"
http://user.itl.net/~glen/doctors.html

It may give some ideas.

Cheers

Tor,

Thanks for the link.

I have also applied for some certificates, so they may also help.

fired an email off to St Pauls church as suggested. Been a bit cheeky and asked them if they could take a photo of any MI's relevant.....be interesting to see the reply, if any.

Spoke with the BMA who put me onto the RCS. They have records back to 1800.

They found William Butler gaining MRCS in 1841, but his address is listed as New Zealand, looks like he may have planned to emigrate once qualified. Either that or he did come from New Zealand, but I think that is unlikely.

Hi Adrian,

I checked the Wellington Provincial Gazettes for 1853, 1857-58, & 1858 for W S BUTLER without success. I checked the earliest NZ Directory (1866-67) for him as well and even looked as far afield as Nelson and Dunedin. He does not appear in the NZ Biographies Index at National Library.

As for the FURMENGER’s, though;
1853 Provincial Gazette for Wellington.
Furmenger Samuel, Woolcombe-street, labourer, household, Willis-street.

1857-58 Provincial Gazette for Wellington.
Furmenger Samuel, Woolcombe-street, labourer, household, Woolcombe-street.

1858 Provincial Gazette for Wellington.
Furmenger Samuel, Woolcombe-street, labourer, household, Woolcombe-street.

Tor,

Appreciate the effort. Just typical of this lot, not only are they proving hard to track, but when you do find reference they live if what seems to be the longest street in New Zealand, certainly Wellington.

I have ordered some printouts from the BMD NZ, so fingers crossed they find them and there is useful information included.
