1861 census Kirkmaiden
« on: Friday 25 January 08 11:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I hope someone can help me with this;
Helen McCracken born 18th January 1861 Kirkmaiden
Father: Alexander McCracken
Mother: Elizabeth Dickson (Dixon)
I have Helen on the 1871 census living with her Grandparents Alexander and Elizabeth McCracken (my 3x Grt. Grandparents) at 54 Stair Street, with her Father Alexander U35. Can someone please check the 1861 to see where she is living? Also her parents. I think her Mother may have been Irish.
Her Father married Elizabeth Porter in the 1870's.

Regards
Beenie

Hi Beenie

Could this be her?

1861 - Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire
Ref: Parish 898, ED 6, Pg 11
Address: High Ardwell F.
Head: William MAIN 33, Ag Lab, b Stoneykirk, WIG
Wife: Ann MAIN 34, b Ireland
Son: Sam'l MAIN 9, Scholar, b Stoneykirk, WIG
Son: William MAIN 7, Scholar, b Stoneykirk, WIG
Dau: Sarah MAIN 5, b Stoneykirk, WIG
Son: Rob't MAIN 10 months, b Stoneykirk, WIG
Boarder: Helen M CRACKAN 3 months, b Stoneykirk, WIG

IGI marriages and births of children, shows the wife/mother is Ann MURRAY and they married 1848 Stoneykirk.

Helen's father:
In 1851, was he the 25 yr Farm Labourer in Kirkmaiden working away from home of his parents? And in 1871 is he listed as a Fisherman, with his parents  on the actual image? The best I could see was:

1861: Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire
Ref: Parish 898, ED 4, pg 5
Address: Low Curghie Farm House
Servant: Alex'r McCRACKAN 25, Ag Lab, b Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire
In employ of the farming family of James McGILL.

Can't see Elizabeth. Only 1 child to Alex' and Eliz.  on the IGI (Helen)  and it is extracted...I wonder if she died in childbirth?

Cheers
AMBLY

Hi AMBLY,
Thank you so much for this, Alexander's Grandmother was  Sarah Main, so William and Alexander may be cousin's and that explains why Helen is with them. I can't find William Maine's birth, on the 1851 census he is listed as being born in Portpatrick, which isn't far. It's a shame about Elizabeth Dickson.
Thank you again for your time.
