Non Conformist Baptism - Newburn
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 04:11 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching, without any luck, for baptisms in the Newburn Parish Records for my Scott family. I am coming to the conclusion that they may not have belonged to the Church of England.

Can some kind lister tell me where I would find baptisms for non-conformists (by this I mean Presbyterian, Methodist, etc) living in the Newburn Parish in the early 1800's.

Many thanks :)

Most surviving Nonconformist registers earlier than 1837 were handed in to the Registrar General, and are now in The National Archives. The births and baptisms (and the relatively few marriages) are mostly indexed in the IGI www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true and all the records, including burials,  now on www.bmdregisters.co.uk with links to actual images, on a pay-per-view service.

According to The National Archives Catalogue, nothing is listed for Newburn, but non-CofE congregations by definition did not use the parish structure - Methodists, for example, used Circuits.

Hope you find them

Hi Dorothy

Genuki is a good source for finding out where Church Records are held:

But here in Newcastle we have easy access( film)  to ( I would say) ALL church records in the area( South Northumberland and north County Durham)from way back, including Parish ( = C of E) and non-conformist church records.

And as Helen says GenUKI site shows what church records are available and where.

Michael - My apologies for not acknowledging your reply earlier, have my mum sick and family history has taken a "back seat" at the moment.

It is great that there are many records in the Newcastle area. I would really love to search the records personally but unfortunately I am in Sydney NSW, so rely very much on internet access to records and the ever faithful volunteers who will do look-ups.

Hi Kossie

I assume from the question you originally asked that you have searched the Newburn registers - possibly using the IGI site - but with no success.  Hence you are wanting to look at non- conformist registers?

What is the Scott name you are looking for?
