Are there more Lowdon Seaton Burn born U.S.returns?
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 11:13 GMT (UK) »
Thomas (1827) and George (1843) Lowdon, both sons of Richard  (1801ish) and Isabella (1804) Lowdon emigrated to the USA.
Thomas stayed, and did very well.
George returned. to Seaton Burn.
I have now found a grandson of Richard, [through his son William [1838 ]-  Alexander Lowdon (1870) on the 1901 Census with his first 2 children born in America.
Does anyone know of any more of the family who tried their luck across the Atlantic?

Hi,

I think the 2 children born USA may not be Alexander LOWDON's this looks like them in 1891,

Thomas              Boarder  S  40  Coal Miner         Durham Shotton

Marriage
Alexander LOWDON    Sep Q 1893  Tynemouth    v.10b  p.410
Annie ORKNEY with same details.

I wonder if the census means Washington D.C or Washington State?

That's fascinating, Daisy.
That would explain why Alexander was still living with father William & mother Hannah on the 1891 census. I hadn't understood that bit.
Still relatively new to all this. Second (and third) marriages have had me following tangents more than once.
How did you tie in to the Orkneys?

Hi,

Glad to help :)

I also found Alexander LOWDON in 1891 still single so looked for his marriage to an Ann*, luckily there was only one in Northumberland :) to an Annie ORKNEY or a Margaret Ann MORLEY. Finding Annie in 1891 (Ann* no surname, b.1865 Crook) with the children born USA made me think that was the right one :)

I haven't managed to find an Ann* + Alexander ORKNEY marriage though :(

Thanks.
You worked from Alexander. . . . .
I'm still fascinated by all the different avenues we can take to verify information.
Alexander's Grandfather, Richard, was my Gt Gt Grandfather. His eldest son, Thomas went from Coal miner to JP in America,
My Gr Grandfather George brought his family back after his wife died.
Now Alexander adopted 2 American Born Children.
And I thought in those days people didn't travel very far, and often married the girl next door!
Not bad for a little mining village!
