Ann MALLETT
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 12:11 GMT (UK) »
On the 1851 Census there is a Susanah GURMIN 72, a gate keeper living at 'Post Way Toll Gate' Burghill, with 5 young people one of whom is Ann MALLETT aged 16. On the 1861 Census there is an Ann APPERLEY aged 25 who is married to Robert APPERLEY 25 with son Charles 3 and Francis MALLET aged 7 (probably her brother). Robert is listed as a stone mason & gate keeper - but I don't know where. I cannot find Ann on the 1841 Census. I am trying to trace her parents.

Hi Chopendoz,

Just a word to say that Francis Mallett age 7 in 1861 is recorded as 'son in law' (= stepson) so he was probably Ann's son instead of her bother.

I'm sorry I can't see Ann in 1841 either  :(

Added: her marriage cert would tell you her father's name (hopefully!)
Ann Abigail Mallett - Robert Apperley

Hi Look up www.wells-genealogy.org.uk/apperley/james.htm as she is listed under the seventh generation of apperleys as robert apperleys wife.   I am also trying to find out more information on her. I am their great great granddaughter and live in Australia. I only just signed onto this site today and am having trouble navigating my way around.  Her son Arthur Charles Apperley was born 13th sept 1857. She died on 2/4/1905 6 weeks after her husband Robert. I dont this francis aged 7 is her son. She married robert apperley 27/7/1856 at Ashperton hereford england.  He was from a family of stonemasons.
please contact me if you or anyone else has her family history. thanks heaps

I think that Ann MALLETT may be the illegitmate daughter of Esther/Hester MALLITT who was born in 1816 in Hereford. She, Esther, died in Jun 1836 also in Hereford.
I am happy to send gedcom file of the Hereford MALLITT
family to anyone who would like to contact me on (*)
I am directly related to Esther's sister Elizabeth.
I have tried to find both Esther's burial in 1836 and also baptism of Ann (c.1835) but no luck yet.
Any help or ideas welcomed. I only live an hour's drive from Hereford Record Office..best wishes to all...Pat

Thanks heaps Pat (hadriana) Every little bit helps. If esther mallitt was 20 when she died 1 year after Ann was born perhaps Susanah Gurmin might have been her grandmother  but its hard to fathom.  I do know that according to our 1883 official Marriage lines here in Qld her Daughter Alice Ann Apperley listed Birthplace of Ashburton, Hereford England with fathers rank of Robert Apperley, occupation stonemason and mothers name on that certificiate clearly showed Abagail Mallet (Exact Spelling)  & I am led to believe her name was Ann Abagail Mallet, I think we should  be looking up Abigail Ann Mallet born about 1835, her date of death was 2/4/1905 and she married Robert Apperley 27th July, 1856. Witness to that marriage was Thomas Apperley and Mary BRAZIER. They died 6 weeks apart.  Her actual place of birth I think is ST JOHNS, Hereford.
Any further information would be much appreciated from us here in Australia.

I had found Esther MALLITT's burial (apologies for this error). She was buried in St John's Hereford on 6 Jun 1836 aged 20.
The Hereford Journal published on 8 Jun 1836 reads:
"On Thursday died in her 21st year Esther 4th daughter of Mr MALLITT tailor of this city"
However there was no christening for Ann Abigail MALLITT (or variants)  in St John's.
I understand that to be married in a Church of England church (as AA was) you needed to be christened beforehand. This sometimes meant an adult christening so I did check Ashperton for period before 1856 when she was married - no luck. I think it is going to mean a systematic search of all parishes in HEF. I do not think the FHS are doing a baptism index unfortunately. By the way Esther had a sister Abigail and her mother was called Ann.
Keep smiling!...Pat in the snow! :)

Hello cousins, This is quite an old post, but I hope you are still
active on this forum.

Ann Abigail Mallett was my GG grandmother, so I was interested to
chance upon your discussion. Ann is one of my stumbling blocks -
not ready to call her a brick wall yet.

I have been looking at her son Francis today who at the 1861 census
was described as born Burghill, (where Ann was at the 1851 census).

See Birth Francis Lucas Mallet Mar 1853 Hereford 6a 438
I have just ordered this.

If this is Ann's son, then the father's surname may be Lucas.

A search of Burghill for Lucas 1851 results in:

HO107 piece 1977 folio 483 page 8
Burghill Village, Burghill, HEF.
Mary Lucas, Head, Widow, 46, Washer Woman, Bishopton, HEF.
Frances Lucas , Son,Unmarried, 22, Black Smith, Burghill, HEF
John Lucas, Son,, 19, Lab, Burghill, HEF
George Lucas, Son, 10, At Home, Burghill, HEF
Ellen Lucas, Daughter, 6,, Burghill, HEF

This is a few households away from where Ann was living in 1851
on the Post Way which runs into Burghill village.

With any luck there will be a bastardy order held at the County
record office, but if the birth cert confirms my guess, I won't bother.

If anyone would like to contact me please use PM, If you dont have
enough posts yet to do that just post here until you do.

I have a lot of BMD certs for Ann's Apperley descendants, and in turn
would appreciate a view of any Mallett/Mallitt information.

Hope you have all been enjoying your Christmas.  ;D
