Ledbury Workhouse Records - POWELL COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 30 January 08 00:35 GMT (UK) »
My husband wishes to know if there is anyone with access to the Ledbury Workhouse records who can help him obtain information relating to that of his great-grandfather, William Powell, born in the Ledbury Workhouse on Mar 12, 1843, and also to that of William's mother, Mary Powell.  Have no info on Mary and no father is listed on William's BC.

In 1851, aged 8, William surfaces in the home of a stonemason, Mr Edward Gardner, living at 215 Overross St, Ross-on-Wye, whose name he adopts in addition to his own.

Hi SC

The Ledbury Workhouse records are held by Hereford Archives http://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/3584.asp

Found the records very informative when I looked at them a couple of years ago.

Contact the archives with specific dates and they should let you know what information is available and what the cost would be for a search and details of the entry(ies).   If I remember correctly the books were quite fragile and couldn't be photo copied.

Thanks for your advice, Susan & Frances

I have contacted Herefordshire Archives and will see what they can come up with.

Herefordshire Archives said that Mary Powell's age was not recorded but that she came from the Pixley District nr Ledbury so this is as far as we can go

Thanks to anyone who helped
