WW11
« on: Friday 07 January 05 05:33 GMT (UK) »
My father Claude Turner was a prisoner of war in Germany after being captured in Crete.
He had a British friend, Ian Reid (not sure of the spelling) who wrote a book about their experiences.
My father unfortunately lost his copy so this is a long shot at trying find out something about his friend or the book.
Would be grateful for any help with this.
Regards,
Wisby

Hi Wisby

You could try searching the British library catalogue for the author under various spellings ie. Ian REID and see if there are any likely titles:

Good luck

Hi Wisby

I don't know if this is coincidence or not but whilst in the library today - tucked amongst the fiction (totally the wrong place) was a  book titled "Dad's War" by Howard REID.  From what I could see it is kind of biography about his father "Ian REID" of the Black Watch whose book was "Prisoner at Large - the story of five escapees" first published in 1947.  I only quickly flicked through it and noticed a photo of a gravestone in the name of (I think) COCKAYNE.  I noticed there was also a website address for the publisher on the back of the book so they may be able to put you in touch with Howard if this would help.  You should be able to find the book with publisher's details with a web search.

Hi Casalguidi,
I think I am meant to find that book, the story goes my father was one of the escapees and as he is now deceased we can't confirm this.
I have the IBSN number and the publishers name so I will be checking our library first, then try through the publisher.
Thank you for your help. I just love this site it has been such a help.

That is at least two remarkable pieces of detection by Casalguidi today. Top form :) :) :)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

I have had great success finding books I wanted, long out of print or hard to find, via http://www.abebooks.co.uk. It may take a few months, but sooner or later an email reply turns up with details from a bookseller somewhere, sometimes the other side of the world, who has it in stock.
