Up the Khyber.
« on: Wednesday 30 January 08 17:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello Folks,
Firstly ,please excuse any errors of protocol. My first posting on your Armed Forces board.
I am hoping someone will have Medal Rolls /Regimental Notes or what have you, covering 19th Century Wars and campaigns etc in India  that can give us a bit more information about my Wifes Grandfather. I note most on here concern the earlier Afghan wars We would obviously like to know as much as possible.
His Discharge paper states that
"He is discharged in consequence of" that is printed . Then in handwriting "Having been found Medically unfit for further Service"
He only had one eye when we knew him that may have been why,.As he was a shepherd the story was a sheep had kicked him in the eye.
Apparently he would never talk about his Army career only to say it was B.... Hot.
The family always said he had been in Africa in the  Boer War . It was only recently when I aqquired this bit of paper, we realised he had been in India.
We have his discharge Paper dated 20th March 1900 which says he had Army service of 9 years and 99 days of which 4 years and 167 days were spent abroad.
It states he was awarded Medal with clasp for CHITRAL 1895 and what looks like PUNJAB 1897 & 1898.
Before you ask ,unfortunately we have no idea what happened to the medal/s (he may well have chucked them down the well, was one story) if he even claimed it or them.

His details were :-
3332 William Marshall.  East Kent Regiment of Buffs.
Attested at Gravesend on the 12 th December 1890 for the East Kent Regiment ,
at the age of 18 -5/12ths yrs.

There is a full description of him on final discharge at Canterbury but it doesnt say if he still had both eyes !

Thanking you all in advance ,
                                                       Best Wishes Roger

The Chitral campaign was widely reported in the press. These reports (free site) mention the East Kent regiment - click on the paragraph headline to view article -
