Devon 1851 census look up please: HEXT and COLE
« on: Friday 07 January 05 09:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'd appreciate someone searching for the following in the 1851 census please:

1) James Hext, born 1833, with a father called Robert.

2) Mary Cole, born circa 1839 in Manaton, father called James. Mother not known. (I can't find a birth certificate.) I suspect she had an elder brother called George.

Many thanks.

Thanks Jaki,

That looks to be the right James Hext, as at the time of his marriage some years later he was a blacksmith.

I was hoping to find him with his family though: if it is not too much trouble could you also do a search for his father, Robert Hext. I don't know much about him, other than that he is described somewhere in my records as a farmer.

Thanks.

Could this be James's father Robert

Robert Hext  Head  42  Ag lab occupying 10acres b. Manaton, Dev
Dinah Hext  Wife     37  b. Manaton, Dev
John   Hext   Son     13  b. Widdencombe, Dev
Mary   Hext   Dau     12 b.  Widdencombe, Dev
William  "       Son     10 b. Widdencombe, Dev
Elizabeth "     Dau      9  b. Lidford, Dev
Avis        "      Dau      7  b. Manaton
Anne      "      Dau      6  b. Manaton
Robert   "       son      3  b. Manaton
Richard   "      son      1  b. Manaton

East Challacombe,Manaton, Newton Abbot, Devonshire

Pro ref  HO/107/1871  folio 128  page 4  film  0221019

Or I think this is a better option for James Parents

Robert Hext  Head  62  Farming 28 acres  b. Moreton, Dev
Deborah  "    Wife   55                               b. Widecombe
Thomas   "     son    27  farmers son          b.      "
Richard    "     son    20     "          "                      "
Stephen  "      son   15     "          "                      "
Deborah  "      dau   13     "          dau                  "

Lr Natsworthy, Widecombe in Moor, Harvey Abbot, Devonshire

pro ref HO/107/1871  folio 129  page 7  film 0221019

There is also a Robert Hext aged 26 working as a farm lab for Richard Smeardon of Heatree, Manaton, Newton Abbot.

Just thought that could be useful to your research.

All the best Anjo
