not to sure now if this is your family mary should'nt be there
she should be with john gentry.
then again her age does'nt tally with other censuses she should be abt 26 not 21.
mercy's age would be 21.
it probably is mercy but there is a doubt there now.

Thank you. I wasn't able to reply before now, and will have a proper look before doing so. In one of the censuses I think Mary Ann GENTRY's son is listed with her SMITH family. I'll check. And I'm sure you are right that the enumerator must have got Mary and Mercy's names muddled up…

It's fascinating to see the changes of address in families between censuses.

think this must be the census that you stated that one of the gentry boys was staying with the smith family.

Yes, this 1871 census is the one which definitely links the GENTRY name with the SMITHS.

I've got a query re SMITH. I think I'd better post it separately, but it involves census records.
