1861 was only Scottish census I could find Thomas McCready and family in but maybe you'll be able to spot them.

Thanks this confirms what I thought.
I now think that Margaret Harvey (Mrs McCready) probably died after Thomas senior. Based on the fact that I know Thomas junior and his family came  to live in Tayport Fife about 1904-1908 it was probably after she died.

Elizabeth Hossack McCready was my Grandmother but she died before I was born so I never got to know her.  Her sister Barbara married but died before she had any children, and Thomas jnr, jnr when to live in England. As my mum also died when I was a teenager this is why I never knew her grandfather had been born in Arbroath or had sisters. It has all come as quite a revelation.

I know that my mum went to visit Irish cousins from time to time back in Ireland so quess maybe these where the children of Catherine or Isabella McCready sisters of Thomas junior. There was mention of the name McCartney I think so maybe it was a married name of one?

I hope one day to maybe make a trip to see where my roots come from.

Many thanks again.  ;D

Just to update you I have checked out the street directories for Tayport and discovered my Thomas R V McCready listed from the 1907/08 version. So either he kept the business on in Londonderry or it was sold but the name not changed.

I looked in the Arbroath parish records but could find no birth record of Margaret McCready who was 7 in the 1861 census or a marriage between Thomas & Margaret but I suppose they may have married elsewhere. Anyway when I get Thomas junior’s birth certificate it will supply this information and so help solve the mystery.

Finally got to see birth certificate for Thomas Rolston Vaughan McCready Born 6th Nov 1956 in Arbroath right enough.
With out your help I would never have known that was where he was born as no one in family mentioned this as he was always thought to be Irish just shows how mistakes get past down the line.
Also got his sister Isabella Born 27th May 1858 in Arbroath but at a different address. Unfortunately there was no date or place of marriage for their parents on the certificates ???

No luck so far with Parish records for birth of their daughter Margaret abt 1853 or their marriage but maybe one day I'll get lucky. :)

It would seem Margaret Jane Helen Harvey was married before to James Williamson 2nd Aug 1844 Dundee. It appears there also was a birth of Isabella Williamson 28th July 1845 Dundee. I wonder if she died young as Thomas & Margaret also had Isabella Born 1858.

Glad that you were able to confirm the births in Scotland.
Can't see a McCready-McCartney marriage in Co. Londonderry but index is not complete however I did find another interesting item.

Margaret E. J. H. McCready  married 1873 (Co.Derry) to Duncan Kennedy Watson. Have a hunch this Margaret could be the one born c1854 in Scotland (Margaret E.J.H. named after mother Margaret Ellen [Helen] Jane Harvey?).

The above couple had at least 2 children:
1. Margaret Helen Jane McCready Watson born 7 Mar.1874 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
2. Kathleen J.G. Watson born Scotland married 20 Feb.1907 Manhattan, N.Y. Frank Dalton.

Can send you more on this Watson connection if you are interested in the details.

It does seem very likely given the name that this is the right Margaret.
It does seem this family flitted back and forth between scotland & Ireland.
Yes I'd love more information.
Thanx again :)
