Rothes 1861
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 11:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Is there any way of finding out who was living in Green Street Rothes in 1861.
I have a James Barclay born there in 1859 and his brother Alexander born there in 1863.

In 1861 census James is with his Grandmother in Boyndie Banffshire and his parents (who aren't yet married) are in service elsewhere.

Why were both the children born in Green Street Rothes?

I'd be very glad of any help.

Thanks
Susan

Hi Susan

Might be a little hard to determine the why and who from the address 'green street'.  An address search with an exact match on the 1861 census brings up 221 entries, ie lots of No.x Green Street entries. No Barclay.

Regards.

Hi Monica

Thanks for looking.  How do I do an address search?  I'm wondering if any of the entries that came up were for anyone called Innes.  This is the mother's surname and I'm thinking maybe she went to family to have her babies.

Thanks again

Hi ev

I don't know whose address it is - I'm thinking that it may be a relative of Ann Innes who is the mother of the two children who were born there in 1859 and 1863 but who (herself) is elsewhere in 1861 - in Birnie, Banff actually.

But James and Mary Innes could well be her parents.  I'm off to do some searching.

Thank you lots.
Susan

ps modified this post because I accidentally hit post before I had finished typing  ::)

Hi Ev and Monica

Thanks for digging further.
I have now got James' and Ann's marriage entry (thanks for the ref Monica) which gives her parents as James Innes and Mary Innes MS Stephen.  So that baptism fits ev thanks.

I think the James Innes baptised to James Innes and Ann Mantoch as the 1861 census says that Ann Mantach is mother to James.

Thanks ever so much, I have lots mor info now and this all started with just a query as to why two babies were born in Green Street.

Incidentally, although I spent my honeymoon in Forres many years ago, I am not at all familiar with the area - these place names are like a foreign language  ;D

Thanks again to you both
