I am looking for info on Ellen McCarthy born in Pontypool about 1850. I don't have much on her other than
she married George Henry Atkinson of Pembroke.

That was one of the big mysteries in the family.
I wonder what brought them to Wales.

 The sea passage from Cork to South Wales isn't overlong and there was plenty of work in the industrialised areas. You're lucky to get detailed places of birth for Ellen's parents. So often, it's just Ireland.
Ellen's birth certificate would give Mary's maiden name, but I suspect it's Harrington as I noticed one of Ellen's son's has this as his middle name. There is another Ellen registered Pontypool

Just checked and the marriage is also registered Pontypool
John McCarthy march qtr 1843 Pontypool vol 26 pg 118 with Mary Harrington on the same page.

Wonder if this is Mary in 1841?

That is all fascinating stuff!
The mention of the name Harrington ties in with a few bits that I have and the puzzle is starting to
come together.
I guess it's off to Ireland now.

I couldn't spot them in 1871, but don't think that's the family as I think I'd found them on an earlier census - several McCarthy families headed by a John in Monmouthshire at the time.

Hello again.
Does the marriage cert for John McCarthy and Mary Harrington shed any light
on who their parents might be? Sadly due to a Civil War and British occupation
records are rather scant in Ireland.
