British Army in India
« on: Friday 07 January 05 16:09 GMT (UK) »
Hiya,

I suspect that an ancestor of mine was in the British Army in India at the time of the 1881 census. Can anyone tell me where I can find the 1881 census for "British" India.

Thanx,

Fizzy,

I don't know about the 1881 census, but I wanted the same sort of info on the 1901 census. I emailed the PRO at Kew and they told me that the  British Army serving overseas was not counted in the census.

Likely therefore, that the same applies to the 1881 census. If you want to be definite, go the the PRO website and you'll find a 'contact us' section where you can send an email.

Fizzybubble, hi

You might find these two websites useful generally if you decide to research Brits in colonial India:
