Does anybody know about Widnes Weekly News archives ??
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 16:28 GMT (UK) »

I've been looking for 1918 AVL's for Widnes on line - I can't find them .... and now I doubt if they were even done !! :-\ ( just as an aside here's a list of some that were done - see below !! )
I am looking for a soldier .... neither the Lancashire or Cheshire records offices are able to help because AVL's or even electoral registers for Widnes in 1918 cannot be found - and this is further complicated by the fact that it was in Lancashire but is now in Cheshire and it's not certain who has such records even if they do exist  ::) ::) ::)

I'm hoping that somewhere in the Widnes Weekly News archives there may be a mention of him but I'm hoping that the soldier in the issue of the London Gazette in which the soldier named (Mason 21588 Pte J 9th Bn South Lancs  was MiDs was 31152 (page 1480) and this was published on 28 Jan 1919) is the right one

James Mason born in Widnes (when it was in Lancashire) on 29-2-1896 and he was living at 13 Beaumont Street at the time of the 1901 Census and he did survive the war !

Any suggestions of where to look next would be very much appreciated !

Annie  :)

This may help.
Widnes Library hold on micro film copes of the Widnes Weekly News in year order, starting in the late 1880's to the present date.

Late last year we carried out some research on family announcements that were published in the newspaper during the period 1914 - 1918 I noticed that there was information printed re killed in action, promotions etc.

To use this facility you have to book use of the machine.

The best and quickest four hours I have ever spent reseraching.

Thank you Geoff for that ...... at least I know now that there is a possibility for finding something !!  :)

I'm not able to get there  ... so I have to try and be creative and think of others ways to find the information I need !

Widnes & Runcorn Library - THE BEST

Widnes Library did me a massive favour a couple of years ago.
I needed to know if someone had been buried at Farnworth Church or not, they went through all the registers for me on fiche and then emailed me the details.  The fantastic lady then apologised because she couldn't tell me the location of the headstone....  what a star.

Runcorn Library went through Weekly News from the 20's for me too and sent me photocopies of an inquest - which included a photo of the deceased.

Fantastic service, its all in the way you ask in the first place.........

Good Luck with your search.
