Quick help with Hertfordshire geography please
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 19:36 GMT (UK) »
Found a baptism of a possible great x 6 grandmother, Mary Bau(c)k on the IGI 28 Jul 1745 at Aspeden.

Is this the same as modern Aspenden?

If it's the right person, then she marries Joseph Parker in Widford 20 Apr 1767.  Aspenden to Widford is about 12 miles on modern roads using route planning software, so a bit less on minor roads/tracks/across the fields, which wouldn't be out of the question.  Though it's odd they didn't marry in her parish.

Hi Aulus

I have to agree with everyone else.  This is almost certainly a transcription error and the parish in question is Aspenden.

You'll often find in old handwriting a bar above a word to indicate missing letters - I have seen 'Harpden' with a bar over the p to indicate the missing letters that would make Harpenden.  Maybe a similar thing here, but the person who transcribed it either didn't know that the bar represents an abbreviation, or didn't know the area well enough to know that the full word is Aspenden.

Also, Aspenden and Wiford are both pretty close to Ermine Street, which at that time was one of the main roads from London to Edinburgh and would have had stagecoaches running up and down it.

Hi,
If you look up Aspenden in the Victorian History of England Hertfordshire in your library it'll tell you if there are alternative spellings. Here's a few more in Hertfordshire. Yardley = Ardeley; Risden=Rushden; Cotteridge=Cottered. Of course it's more likely to be a transcription problem. If you search through the BMDs at HAL it should clear the matter up.

Good hunting
