Vic Deaths lookup please
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please lookup the deaths of the children of Joseph Powell Ostler and his wife Susan Annie.  They arrived in Victoria in December 1859 and were gone from Victoria by 1862.

The children were noted on the Unassisted Immigrants as:
Susanna Ostler, age 1 in 1859
William Ostler, age 1 in 1859

The couple went on to have Ellen A Ostler in Chiltern in about 1860.

Many thanks
Jean

Hi Jean.

There are these entries in the index......

Annie Ellen OSTLER born in 1859 in INDIGO
Father = Joseph Powell OSTLER & Mother = Susan Anne COSSINS
Ref = 22031

Harry William OSTLER born in 1861 in INDIGO
Father = Joseph Powell & Mother = Susan Ann COSSINS

I can't see deaths forSusanna and William though......  :-\ I tried a variety of spellings.

Thanks Dee

That was quick!  I went away to make a coffee and bingo! you have answered.

I'm not familiar with Victoria - Would Indigo be around the Chiltern area?  Or at least in the goldfields area?

Thank you for the mother's maiden surname, now I can start looking for a marriage in England.

Annie Ellen would be theirs - But Harry William?  He must have died before the 1871 English census.   Now I'm thinking that maybe Susana and William didn't die in Victoria.  They didn't appear on the 1871 English census either.

A quick look at http://www.indigoshire.vic.gov.au/
will tell you where Indigo is, Jean, and there is an Indigo Goldfields Cemetery, but I can't find out much about it.

You just happened to post as I came on board this morning!  :D  :D

I've just been thinking......the children could have died on board ship.....or even at the goldfields and their deaths not been registered.   :-\  :-\

Hi dee and Jean

1881 England census  shows Ellen A Ostler age 21 born Australia
living at 40 Myddelton Street Clerkenwell London
with widowed father Joseph P Oslter and other siblings.
Also shows another daughter Evelyn A Ostler age 16 born Australia
living with them.

Can post details if you wish.

Thanks Dee
I have had a look at the Indigo Shire site.

It looks as though that period of time was right in the middle of the goldrush - from Beechworth  to Chiltern.   Very hard to pinpoint deaths of children I suppose.

Do you happen to know if the Unassisted Immigrants list was prepared before the voyage or on arrival?  One or both of the children could have died on the voyage if the list was prepared at the beginning of the voyage.

Thanks, I have found the family on the 1871 and 1881 English census.

I'm sorry but I must fly - granddaughter duty!  I'll get back later.

I can't answer that question, Jean....I am not very knowleagable about some of the Victorian records. Maybe someone else will know the answer.....or maybe an email to the contact link at
http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/contact.asp
will get you an answer.

There might even be a Victorian Rootschatter who could look at the microfiche of the arrival to see if there are any more details on there if you are prepared to wait till one is visiting .  :-\
