Hi there Jean,

Good summary!! ;D  ?I agree with you.

Like cando said about   perhaps they had been 'home' for a visit and......

Could it be the ones that arrived on the Henry Gillespie 1852, arrived in Victoria,
had a few children 1854-1857, went back home and came back on Lightning in 1859. ???
We can only guess.

...and had another child in 1861 [the usual two year gap between births  ;)] and the mother Susannah died the same year.

I think all we need is the marriage cert of Joseph Powell and Susan A - well if it was my research that would be my next step.

Good outcome ;D ;D

Cheers
cando

Edit - Jean is this your family or are you being a kind soul and helping someone?   Just curious.

Now we have a dau Eveline's birth registered 1864 in NSW but I found a Harry OSTLER  death on free bdm.  There are only four Harry's on the transcribed deaths.
Two  are for infants and the other in 1915.

Deaths Jun 1864
Ostler    Harry         Wisbeach    3b   416

Unless Eveline was born early in 1864 it may not be Harry William b. 1861  :-\ :-\

Just one more thing - Joseph Powell Ostler was shown as the undertaker on the death registration of John O'Meally, bushranger, who was shot at "Goimbla" in November 1863.

Joseph Powell Ostler born 7th December 1831 at Bridport Dorset the son of Mary Ann Powell (by Great Great grandmother) and Samuel Ostler.  Samuel died and Mary Ann then married Samuel Symes who was a carpenter and learnt his trade.  Joseph was known as Joseph Symes in the 1851 Census and living at Bridport, later he emigrated to australia and then came back to england and settled in  london and took his original name of Joseph Powell-Ostler.  He had five children, Ellen and Evelyn were both born in Australia Bendigo New South Wales and Horace, Florence and alice were born in London.  The last child was born around 1874 and by 1881 he was stated as a widow.

If any one has any more information on Joseph Powell Ostler please let me know.   :)
