Jean, I have rechecked the Ostler entries.....and here's something else.......the marriage of the parents.....so that is strange if both of them are listed on the Unassisted Immigrants List.

Hmmmmm.....

Joseph Powell OSTLER married Susan Ann COSSINS in 1858

Hi everyone,

Don't know if this will help or confuse (or is totally not relevant  ::))

Could this be the Susan that married  Joseph Ostler?

Susan COSSIN Age 20 arrived in Victoria as an unassisted migrant
on "Blackwall" 1858

Raylen  -  Firstly I should have explained that on the 1871 census the family is indexed as OSKER not OSTLER.

This is how we started to trace them, because Evelyn A was shown as born N S Wales, Forbes.

Dee    -   This must be why I couldn't find a marriage in England for them.

I think it's got to be them - surely there wouldn't be too many Joseph Powell Ostler's or Susan Ann Cossins who married about that time.

Raylen - The plot thickens.  So, if that is the right Susan Cossin, firstly was she in fact 29 and not 20.  Did she and Joseph get married, whip back to England, have twins and arrived back in Victoria by December 1859?

Hi

Referring to the initial request -  doubt this is the correct family on the index

OSTLER   JOS   32   DEC   1859   LIGHTNING   B   171   004
OSTLER   SUSANA   1   DEC   1859   LIGHTNING   B   171   004
OSTLER   SUSANA   29   DEC   1859   LIGHTNING   B   171   004
OSTLER   WM   I   DEC   1859   LIGHTNING   B   171

Have we two families - this shipping record does not mention the P in Joseph's name and there are two other couples with same first names in the index having chn during this period.

Have you checked for a marriage in England or birth of Susana and Wm to support the shipping record.

I think Raylen's find of Susan COSSIN is most relevant and the following is also your family.

So we have a marriage and two children in Victoria plus

Hi again

To try and see where everyone fits in  ;D

OSTLER SUSANNAH   A (No Age)  DEC 1852 HENRY GILLESPIE B 022 002
OSTLER JOSEPH   A (No Age) DEC 1852 HENRY GILLESPIE B 022 002
possibly
Joseph Ostler & Susannah Burgess Mackerill married England Mar Qtr 1852

Could this be Joseph arriving alone?
OSTLER JOSEPH 23 FEB 1855 IDA B 088 003

Raylen the couple you have detailed above are the couple with same first names I referred to as having chn in the Vic bdm's.....and it looks as though you have found Joseph arriving. ;D

The other couples full names - Joseph OSTLER and Susannah Burgess MACKERREL

They also had a Susannah b. 1857 Brighton, Vic - perhaps they had been 'home' for a visit and......

Birth from  free bdm

Births Sep qtr 1859
OSTLER    William Burgess         Wisbeach    3b   619

Of course these events could be co-incidental but  :-\

I suppose I should mention that ages on shipping records are not always accurate.

Cheers

OK - let's go back to the beginning and what we know.

We found  Evelyn A Osker in the 1871 English census, age 6, parents Joseph P and Susan A born about 1865 in N S Wales, Forbes. Daughter, at St James Clerkenwell, London.   Joseph P was shown as carpenter.

Other children in the family were
Ellen A, 11 born Chiltern Vic Aust
William S, 4, born Clerkenwell, Middlesex
Ernest V, 2,
Horace S, 7 months.

Then we looked at various notes about early Forbes people and found the birth and death of Arthur Powell Ostler in 1862 and 1863.  And the birth of Eveline Amy in 1864.  Parents were Joseph Powell Ostler (undertaker) and Susan Annie (Co... unreadable)

So what we deduced from this is that they had another child, Ellen in Chiltern, Vic before they came to Forbes.  And returned to England in about 1866 or 1867 before William was born.

So even though there are two Joseph Ostlers marrying Susan / Susannah, I agree with Cando and Raylen that the ones arriving on the Henry Gillespie are "red herrings", together with the ones arriving on the "Lightning".

By the 1881 census the family was
Joseph P Ostler, 48
Ellen A, 21
Evelyn A, 16
Horace S, 10
Alice J, 8
Florence, 7

Susan Annie Ostler bc 1838, died the first quarter of 1878 age 40 at Holborn.
Ernest Vincent Ostler bc1869 died first quarter of 1872 age 3.
William Symes Ostler bc1867 died first quarter of 1872 age 5.
Joseph P Ostler died second quarter of 1913 age 79, carpenter at Islington.

That leaves the Susan Cossin arriving in 1858 on "Blackwall" and the Joseph Ostler arriving in 1855 on "Ida" as the likely suspects.

What do you think?

Jean

Cando

So you have found William and Susannah's births so that about sorts out the "Lightning" lot.

Thanks everyone - they are sorted  .... I think.
