Yes, very interesting reading Andy.  Have you got a little map you can post of the area!  that would be good to see.  I know where the Ovillers ridge is but not sure of the position of the rest of the battlefield.  It's not what they call 'mash valley' is it?  ::)

Atom,
Wrong area, the 5th Army took over quite a considerable length of the French trenches in Late January 1918, which, according to the 14th Division's War Diary, were in a deplorble state. No Battle Zone or rear areas prepared whatsoever. The area this covers is just outside St. Quentin not Ovilliers on the Somme.
I will see if I can get a map from the War Diary and post it here for you.
