Gent, Bristol, not sure when?
« on: Thursday 07 February 08 11:33 GMT (UK) »
I attach another photograph that was in my grandmother's collection when she died. I would be grateful for any advice in dating it. It was taken in Bristol where my great grandfather was living after about 1885. However his father was also living in Bristol in the 1871 census. So I suppose possible dates are 1862 to 1879 and 1885 onwards.

The back gives details of the photgrapher as follows:
W H Moore, Artist & Photographer, Merchant Street, Bristol
and 'Copies of this picture can be had at any time'!
It says they also had branches in London and Paris.
BEDFORDSHIRE/HERTFORDSHIRE: Coles, Marsom, Hurst
BERKSHIRE/WILTSHIRE: Huntley, Williams,  Maslin, Pinnell, Watson, Gulliver, Penny
DERBYSHIRE: Brinsley
DEVON: Bidgood, Northam, Gillard, Westlake
GLOUCESTER: Abrahams, Pritchard, Washburn
IRELAND: Dean, Bateman
MIDDLESEX: Howe, Leah, Truelove
NEW ZEALAND: Bishop, Frankham, Oliver, Gribble
NORFOLK: Liffen, Hacon
SOMERSET: Bishop, Bridges, Palmer, Newport, Barrow, Hill, Wise, Boyte

PS I provided dates in previous post assuming it could be one particular pgreatgrandfater as there is a slight family likeness.
However I forgot that the number of possible ancestors increases as one goes back each generaltion. And I had another greatgrandfater living in Bristol throughout this period.

There was a W. H. Moore trading from 41 Merchant Street Bristol in 1871, he was trading from premises that had been used in 1864 by H. Moore and in 1858 by F & G Moore all of whom had been photographers.

Thanks.

The names of photographers are useful in dating. Can you imagine someone in a hundred years or so looking at our photos and saying "Ah, Boots!" Thought I suppose they will be able to date the computer files - if they survive. Not as excting though.

I'm not an expert in genetleman's fashions. But does anyone know if they fit 1870s or 1880s? If it is one of the great greats or their generation they were born 1843 and 1839.

Has he got something round his left wrist?

Does he look more like an engineer or a printer?

The photographic studio that took my grandparents wedding photos took my parents and my wedding photos.. a timespan of nearly 60 years!  :o

I think that is a cuff or stitching; part of the sleeve and he is wearing a glove on his left hand...  Not sure what he is holding in his right hand though, it looks too stiff and to be the other glove.
Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

Hi, I have photographs of the same man whom I believe to be Benjamin Faux. One shows the
photographer to be W. H. Moore and the second by Arthur Holborn of Stokes Croft, Bristol.
One also includes the information that he once lived in Norton Malreward and then Bristol.
I appreciate that your post was many years ago but hope that this finds you.
   Regards.
