The picture shows 'Footstones' placed against the headstone - for ease of mowing (especially since petrol driven modern mowers)

The footstone usually had just the deceased initials and the year of death.

As Guy points out, several years ago these stones were in their proper place at the foot of the graves, but more and more often they get moved for the reason stated above.
