Help - who is this?
« on: Sunday 10 February 08 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me to identify this gentleman please?   This picture is in the pub oposite Radford Semele church near Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.   We think he might be a Thornley or someone connected to the family.   The Thornleys lived at Radford Hall and owned the Radford Hall Brewery in the early/mid 20th century.
Thanks, Joan

Hello Joan,

Have you put this on the Military board ? The medals and uniform would tell you more about the man.

have you tried the local archaivists ? They should have the local history of Radford Hall.

Did you ask the landlord of the pub ?

Should you want this nice picture coloured , could you re-scan it at 300 to 600 ppi. I think it would look rather nice.

Hi Jim

Thanks for your reply/advice.   I will try the Military board as well, but just thought that you lot see and date so many photos you might be able to help.   The pub landlord is fairly new and as mystified/interested as we were.   Unfortunately we paid a fleeting visit and live too far away to search out the local archivists, but will try online.

Hi Joan

From (our) left:

(1)   Order of the Star of India

(2)   CMG

(3)   ?

(4)   ?

(5)   ? - Afghanistan Medal

(6)   Kabul to Kandahar Star

(7)   ? – either a Coronation medal or Delhi Durbar.

The neck and breast badge is of a different order.

You could try searching for Thornleys on the London Gazette site. I cannot find any that fit in a few Army Lists.

Ken

Hi Ken

Many thanks for your reply.   We were wondering what the medals were.   Any idea what his regiment and rank might have been?

Will try the London Gazette site.

Joan

Hi Viv

We assumed that was the name of the photographer and the date the picture was taken.   It certainly isn't a name connected to the Thornley family, but thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Joan,
Following Ken's identification of the medals and Viv's mention of the name and date at the bottom, I had a look at the medal roll for the 1903 Delhi Durbar and............

Colonel the Honourable C.E. Yate, C.S.I., C.M.G., agent to the Governor-General in Baluchistan

 :) :)

Now to check if we can find him on the Afghan rolls
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.
