Viv, Neil, Ken and Annie.

Thankyou for all your responses.   I'm overwhelmed by the speed and quality of the information and Viv you were right about the name.

What a fascinating career!   I can't see a connection with the Thornleys yet, but one of his children might have married into the family.   Hence his photo hanging in the Thornley Brewery pub.   I have got some delving to do!

If anyone can identify the remaining medals, that would be the icing on the cake!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all your efforts,

Joan

They are bugging me I must admit!  :)

Just a thought, but given the date 1910, would the location have anything to do with him becoming an MP? What were the boundaries of Melton constituency in 1910?

(my geography of the area may be a bit off though  ;D ;D)

Found in W******dia

"Melton was a county constituency centred on the town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. It returned one Member of Parliament to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

The constituency was created for the 1885 general election, and abolished for the 1983 general election. It was succeeded by the Rutland and Melton constituency."

Hope this helps,

Hi everyone.

I think he certainly did have heirs.
Type Yate into the search box on here:
http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx
 :)

He sure did live to a ripe old age!   Have found one son so far:

Charles Curzon Yate, b 03/02/1901, location Quetta.

Thanks for your continued interest.

Some thoughts on medals #3 and #4

If we assume that he's wearing them in the correct order of precedence (seems a reasonable assumption) then what can we say?

- they're not jubilee, coronation, efficiency, or long service medals in any way as they would all be worn after the campaign medals alongside the Delhi Durbar medal.

- they're very unlikely to be campaign medals since the 1894 statement of his war service Ken found only mentions Afghan Medal with clasp and Bronze Star. Surely any others would be mentioned.

This leaves us with Orders after the CMG in precedence, Decorations, Gallantry & Distinguished Conduct medals. But not much on the list leaps out at me  ??? ???

Given his India connections and his political/administrative service you might expect him to have been eligible for the Imperial Service Order or a Kaiser-i-Hind Medal? But otherwise I'm scratching around here  >:( >:(
