WINDMILL HILLS Wexford- COMPLETED

Some of my ancestors are cited as living in Windmill Hills, Wexford, c. 1880.  Would this have been the same as Vinegar Hill?  Or is it a different place entirely?  Does anyone know this area?

Hi Jaylay,
Windmill Hills is situated at the rear of the Municipal Buildings (formerly the Tate School) in Wexford Town  ,Windmill Hills was the Fair Green area of Wexford Town where toll free fairs were held on Whit Monday and on June 29th ,the area supposedly takes its name from a reputed 17 Windmills which which stood there in the 1600's, it was also at one time a place of execution for prisoners from the County Gaol.Hope this is of some help.

Was the ancestor Mr Huggard the solicitor?
There were a few 'big houses' in the area up until recent times.

Actually, Nick it was his father William Huggard, a retired Customs & Excise Officer.  His son Martin lived in Carcur House, Wexford, which I've previously posted about.

But William lived at Windmill Hills, with his wife Ellen - have no more info than that - would love to know more.

Hi Nicky - thank you so much for that.  Very interesting!  Would love anything at all that you can dig up about this place - really would love to pin down the house that William Huggard and his wife Ellen lived in.
