Who is Margaret Ann Clayton?
« on: Wednesday 13 February 08 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone confirm or disprove that Margaret Ann Clayton who married James Cocks in Romsey 2 Jly 1810 is Margaret Clayton bpt St Mary's Portsea 10 Feb 1792 daughter of William & Elizabeth? James appears to be a widower of Plaitford in 1841 & there children were bpt Plaitford but I don't know where Margaret Ann is buried.

This could be difficult.  Plaitford was in Wiltshire until 1895, so you may need this moved to the Wiltshire board.

Prior to 1837, fathers' names were not routinely included on the marriage entry.  However, if (big if) this Margaret is the one baptised in Portsea and she was baptised soon after her birth, then she would only have been 18 on the date of the marriage.  Strictly speaking she would have needed her father's consent and as such it should be recorded on the marriage entry.  If she did not live in Romsey at the time of her marriage, then her parish of residence should also be recorded there.

Romsey is much closer to the border of Wiltshire than to Portsea, so I personally would be inclined to search in Wiltshire first for another possibility.

Plaitford burials not included on the NBI just yet.  :(

Thanks for your helpful reply. I did have a similar request on the Wiltshire board but no luck with Margaret. As her husband appears to have been quite well off & her children seem to have owned half the High St in Southampton (one of them being a JP), I had half expected a flood of replies with 'yes there is a huge monument to this much loved wife & mother'! Funny how it's the ones you least expect that produce a flood of replies! I have noticed a possible death registration for her husband James in Romsey Jun qtr 1862 & two of their adult childrens deaths are registered in 1846 in Romsey where their son Robert Clayton Cocks appears to have run a pub in Market Place. So as I drew a blank on the Wiltshire board, I thought Romsey was worth a shot.
   Thanks for your time.

You're a star! Thanks for that brilliant website! I've been googling Cocks & Clayton for days & not managed to find this site. There is so much on there of relevance to my Allsop side also that it will have to be a trip to Winchester Record Office - just got to break the news to my husband & check the travel lodge directory!!! No further forward with Margaret Ann but who cares!!
Your medal is in the post! Many many thanks,

Hampshire Treasures
Volume 9 ( Test Valley South)
Page 84 - Melchet Park and Plaitford

'The Shoe. Built on the site of the turn-pike, the last keeper J. Cocks, died in 1862, a tablet in Plaitford Church is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Cocks and his wife. The Shoe was also formerly a posting station for the mail coach.'

Margaret's age on burial or on the tablet in the church would give you her approximate birth year which would help with eliminating or allowing for the possibility of the Portsea baptism. However if she was called Margaret Ann (more unusual to have two names at the time) why would the 1792 baptism only be for the name Margaret Clayton?

Regards

Valda

Thanks Bearkat I shall order that will tonight. And thanks to you too Valda at last that will surely give me Margaret's age - fingers crossed. I shall post a query incase anyone happens to live near the church as the suspense is killing me & I will not get a chance to go down until May at the earliest & possibly August!!
You are of course right Valda about the additional name & not only that but James & Margaret Anne don't appear to have named any children William or Elizabeth, so perhaps I am barking up the wrong tree but at least to disprove a theory is better than stalmate!
Thanks again to you both. You're all stars on this site.

Have at last visited Plaitford Church & the plaque says James Cocks died 31 May 1862 aged 75. His wife Margaret Anne Cocks nee Clayton died 9 Aug 1834 aged 46. So both born about 1787/1788. No further forward on the parentage of either but read lots of interesting things in Hampshire Record Office. Perhaps I should visit Wiltshire Record Office next year!
